What to do in case of work injury or illness

Our first goal following an injury is to ensure you are safe and immediate medical needs are addressed.  Employees should be familiar with their department and campus emergency procedures and workers’ compensation practices. All injuries should be reported to your supervisor as early as possible.

OCHE Personnel

Medical Emergencies
requiring immediate,

advanced medical attention.

Emergency Medical System (EMS).
Call 911 to activate Emergency Medical System (EMS).

Summon trained on-site help to provide care and control situation until help arrives.

Send someone to guide EMS to emergency site.

Ensure Supervisor is Notified.

Notify your supervisor at the earliest possible opportunity once the emergency has been addressed.  

Contact Leah Tietz as soon as possible. 

Complete the secure electronic FROI and follow instructions for FROI submittal.

Acute injury requiring medical attention, but not EMS.  (Activate EMS if unsure of severity of medical condition.) Administer First Aid.
Notify Supervisor.
Supervisor may transport to acute care/urgent care, medical provider or emergency room.

Driving while injured is driving distracted and should be avoided.

Call EMS if supervisor has concerns about transport.
Notify your supervisor at the earliest opportunity.

Non-serious injury or an occupational disease that allows a medical appointment to be scheduled. Notify supervisor when symptoms first appear.

Do not unnecessarily delay care.  Employees have better outcomes when this type of injury is reported early.

Campus Personnel

Campus personnel should contact their supervisor and the campus claim coordinator to initiate a workers’ compensation claim.  

Each campus and many departments have specific injury and emergency plans & procedures that campus personnel should be familiar with and follow in the event of an emergency.  For more information contact:

  1. Employee initiates a work comp claim by completing the employee portion of the secure, electronic First Report of Injury (FROI). The supervisor named by the employee in the FROI receives the FROI for completion and submits it electronically to the appropriate campus claim coordinator. This campus claim coordinator is an MUS employee is the designated campus workers’ compensation contact who assists employees and supervisors in accessing, completing, and submitting a work comp claim. The campus claim coordinator is available to facilitate the claim process but is not a claims adjuster and does not determine the acceptability or the compensability of a claim. The entire electronic process is encrypted.

    MUS employees who work and reside outside Montana on a more than temporary basis see additional instructions. Workers’ compensation is regulated state-by-state, MUS purchases a workers’ compensation insurance policy to ensure its non-Montana employees have appropriate state-specific coverage. This claim process may vary slightly from that described for Montana employees.

  2. A professional claims examiner will be assigned to your case to determine compensability of the injury/illness according to Montana work comp statutes and rules. When a claim is accepted, medical care, work comp benefits and appropriate return to work are facilitated by the claim adjuster. See Explanation of the Work Comp Claim Process.

  3. Successful healing and Return to Work are best achieved with early reporting of incidents, following medical advice, working within your capabilities, and staying in communication with your workers’ compensation team. The workers’ compensation team will include the employee and employee’s supervisor, medical provider(s), campus claim coordinator, and claim adjuster.  More complex claims may involve additional specialists on the team.
