ITEM 130-2802-R0306    Authorization to Construct a New Wellness Center; Montana State University Northern

THAT: Consistent with the provisions of MCA 18-2-102(2)(c),the Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes Montana State University - Northern to construct a new Wellness Facility. The estimated cost of this project is $1,250,000.

EXPLANATION: The athletic programs at MSU-Northern have grown significantly since the inception of the Armory Gym and the on-campus population of the general student body has shown an increase in the past two years. Further growth is virtually guaranteed because of: a) the increased popularity of on-campus living; b) the addition of football; c) the increased roster size of the current sports offerings; and d) the need to add women's sports.

This project will construct a new Wellness Center (8300 sq ft of new space with an additional 2000 sq ft of existing space-currently the old wrestling room). This space will include two levels. An upper level for wellness (aerobics, weight training, conditioning) and a ground level for locker rooms, team rooms and new office space. This project will positively impact every program in Health and Physical Education, Wellness and Athletics.

This project will be financed with private funds. No state monies will be used.

This item provides MSU-Northern with the authorization to proceed with the design and construction of the new Wellness Center. However, construction will not proceed until satisfactory funding has been secured.
