ITEM 127-1015-R0505:Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Spanish Upon Anthony Beltramo; The University of Montana-Missoula
THAT:
Anthony Beltramo, during his 32 years of dedicated service to The University of Montana-Missoula, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System and has earned the title of Professor Emeritus of Spanish.
EXPLANATION:
Professor Anthony F. Beltramo has been a valuable member of his language (Spanish) section, the department, and the university community since his arrival on campus in 1972. His specialties are Linguistics and Pedagogy, and his retirement this year will leave a great hole in the program. As Linguistics and Pedagogy are increasingly popular with graduate students, he has advised many of the department's recent M.A. students. He has been responsible not only for Spanish Linguistics and Phonetics courses but also for our Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages course, required for all students who are in the Teacher Education program. In this function, he has for several years taught Methods to students from many language sections: French, German, Classics: Latin, Russian, and Spanish. Because of his particular expertise and the popularity of Spanish, he has long been the department s chief link with the Teacher Education program, advising students, participating on the Teacher Education Committee, and observing student teachers. His dedication to the secondary school teachers and programs in Montana has remained strong, and his service has been much appreciated by the Montana Association of Language Teachers. In 1995, he received the Association's Excellence Award. His service to the university has been rich and significant.
Professor Beltramo has also directed the Study Abroad Program six times, once in Mexico and five times in Spain. His expertise and his care for students have always made his programs valuable experience for all participants.
Publications include three volumes on Linguistics, co-edited with A. Juilland in Linguistic Studies presented to Andr' Martinet, numerous other collaborative volumes on linguistics (Italian, French, and Spanish as well as Chicano). He has also published numerous articles. He has participated, over the years, in many conferences and workshops, always aiming to advance research and teaching in his area; most recently, supported by CAS and the Provost s office, he participated in a week-long summer workshop of the Center for Language Education and Research at Michigan State University (2003). Since his return, he has characteristically put his enriched knowledge to constant use on behalf of his students, the program, and the university.
He plays a mean guitar.
In recognition of the great professional contributions which he made during the thirty-two years of his active involvement in the university faculty, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures is honored and pleased to recommend Professor Anthony Beltramo for Emeritus status. We hope that you will agree that he has, indeed, served us well and deserves well of us in return bene emeritus.
