ITEM 127-1011-R0505 Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Upon Richard J. Field; The University of Montana-Missoula
THAT:
Richard J. Field, in his 30th year of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System and earned the title of Professor Emeritus of Chemistry.
EXPLANATION:
Dr. Richard J. Field earned his PhD from the University of Rhode Island in 1968. He then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Oregon and subsequently at Carnegie Mellon University for a total of seven years, and then he joined the faculty at The University of Montana in 1975. He was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1983, and he served as Chair of the department from 1990 to 1995. He directed the work of 15 graduate students and 5 postdoctoral fellows while at The University of Montana.
Professor Field s pioneering work in the area of nonlinear dynamics in chemistry has provided recognition to The University of Montana at regional, national, and international levels. He has over 100 published scientific papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. One of these papers has been identified by the Institute of Scientific Information as a citation classic. The Journal of the American Chemical Society, widely regarded as the most prestigious chemical journal in the world, ranks this publication as the 104th most cited paper in the 125-year history of the journal.
Professor Field has traveled extensively, giving scientific presentations around the world, brining further visibility to The University of Montana. Highlights include an invited tour of Japan in 1999, 14 different American Chemical Society-sponsored tours in various regions of the United States during the past 25 years, and seminars at nearly all of the universities and colleges in the Northwestern United States.
Professor Field s list of awards provides further evidence of his superb accomplishments as a scientist. He was the recipient of the 1983 University of Montana Distinguished Scholar Award, the 1983 Texas Instruments Founder s Award, and the 1990 Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award for Scholarship. He was awarded the Alumni Career Achievement Award of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oregon in 2001. Most recently, in 2005, he was awarded the Dennison Faculty Award for distinguished accomplishments, which have brought significant recognition to The University of Montana at the regional and national levels.
