ITEM 123-1003-R0504 Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Political Science upon Forest Grieves; The University of Montana-Missoula
THAT: Dr. Forest Grieves, in his thirty-fifth year of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned the title of Professor Emeritus of Political Science.
EXPLANATION: Dr. Grieves earned his Ph.D. degree in 1967 from the University of Arizona and joined the Political Science faculty at The University of Montana in 1969. He was promoted to associate professor in 1972, awarded tenure in 1975, and promoted to full professor in 1976. His outstanding performance in teaching, research and service is evidenced by seven merit awards, receipt of the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1984, and receipt of the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award in 1990.
Dr. Grieves has focused his scholarly work in the field of international relations with particular emphasis on international law. His contributions to the field of political science are reflected in 3 books and numerous articles, monographs and conference papers. Much of his research has centered on German studies and he has worked closely with the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut in Saarbrucken to further German-American relations, for which he received a commendation from the Minister-President of the Saarland. He is also the recipient of several Fulbright grants and an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship to work and study in Germany. Dr. Grieves also helped create the Russian Studies Program at The University of Montana, served as its director for over 25 years, and took the first group of UM students to the former Soviet Union.
His commitment to mentoring students is especially worthy of note. Dr. Grieves is not shy about offering fatherly advice to students, not only about academic performance but also career aspirations all of which has earned him the unofficial title of Reverend Grieves. In recent years, he has been particularly effective in recruiting graduate students to the M. A. program in political science and providing the guidance they need to complete successfully their degree requirements. He has had a lasting and beneficial impact on the lives of many students, undergraduate and graduate alike.
The political science department is honored to recommend Dr. Forest Grieves for Emeritus status.
