ITEM 121-1001-R1103   Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Business Administration upon Michael R. Brown; The University of Montana-Missoula

 

THAT: Michael R. Brown, Professor of Accounting, in his 32 years of service to The University of Montana, has merited the appreciation and commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned recognition as Professor Emeritus of Business Administration.

 

EXPLANATION: Michael Brown is the epitome of a Montana alumnus. After earning his bachelors of science in business administration, with honors and an accounting emphasis, he returned to earn the juris doctor from The University of Montanas Law School in 1969. In 1971 UMs Department of Accounting and Finance hired Dr. Brown as a lecturer to fill an urgent need to teach income tax courses. His entire academic career has been at The University of Montana.

Although teaching income tax courses was Dr. Browns main area of expertise, he also regularly helped with the CPA review course and other accounting courses as well. He was honored as Professor of the Week in November 1996, was awarded the outstanding faculty three times by Beta Alpha Psi accounting honorary, and nominated for the Burlington Northern Foundation achievement award. He held the office of department chair from 1977 to 1980, and again in 1988.

During his tenure at The University of Montana, Dr. Brown served on several campus administrative search committees, UMs physical plant review committee, the faculty benefits committee, and the inter-unit benefits committee. He held the office of Faculty Senate Chair as well as serving on the U.T.U. executive board.

His outreach efforts included recruiting high school athletic students, serving as president of the Montana Society of CPAs, as a member of the National Council of the American Institute of CPAs, and as the western area vice president of the executive board of the Montana Council of Boy Scouts.

Throughout his career at The University of Montana, Dr. Michael R. Brown has served UM and the community with distinction. In this dedicated service he has earned the respect of his students, colleagues, and associates throughout the University and the State of Montana. The Board and the University are grateful.
