ITEM 119-1012-R0503    Naming of the New Multi-Unit Student Housing Facility as the Lewis and Clark Village; The University of Montana-Missoula

THAT: Consistent with Board of Regents' Policy 1004.1, Naming of Buildings, the Board of Regents of the Montana University System authorizes The University of Montana-Missoula to name the new, 11-unit student housing facility the "Lewis and Clark Village."

Additionally, each building within the Village will be named to represent a significant contributor of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Based on historical information and historian confirmation, the individual names include Toussaint Charbonneau, John Colter, Pierre Cruzatte, George Drouillard, Patrick Gass, Francois LaBiche, John Ordway, Nathaniel Pryor, Sacagawea, George Shannon, and York.

EXPLANATION: The University of Montana-Missoula is constructing a student-housing complex as previously approved by the Board of Regents in July 2002, Item 116-1002-R0702.

The new facility is located south of Dornblaser Stadium and east of Higgins Avenue on eight acres of University property. The proposed name is appropriate because the Village is located in the Lewis and Clark neighborhood district of Missoula and is scheduled for completion and occupancy in August of 2004 during the bicentennial recognition of the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition.
