ITEM118-201-R0103:     Approval of Proposal to implement a Two-Year, Agricultural Power and Machinery A.A.S. Degree Program as well as a One-Year Certificate Program; Dawson Community College, Glendive, Montana.

THAT:    The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes Dawson Community College to award an A.A.S. or Certificate to any student who completed the two-year or one-year curriculum in Agricultural Power and Machinery approved by the Board.

EXPLANATION:       Agriculture is a major component of the economy in eastern Montana. As technology advances, farmers and ranchers must stay current with these advances in order to remain competitive in the open market. The ability to compete in this global market requires that agriculturalists utilize the most efficient farming methods and equipment. As agricultural equipment becomes more technically complex, farmers and ranchers are becoming less able to perform their own repairs. Dealers are at the same time facing problems finding qualified technicians to fill openings in their businesses. This program will help fill a need for qualified agricultural mechanics on the farm and in dealerships across eastern Montana. Students in this program will learn proper procedures for operation, maintenance and repair of agricultural equipment and machinery. They will be trained in agricultural engines, power trains, hydraulics, control systems, welding, electricity and farm equipment. Graduates will be equally well prepared to return to the farm or go into a position with an agricultural equipment dealer.
