ITEM 116-1502-R0702  Approval of Proposal to Rename the Control System Option to Electrical Engineering Option within the Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree in General Engineering; Montana Tech of The University of Montana

THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes Montana Tech of The University of Montana to rename the Control System option to the Electrical Engineering option within the Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree in General Engineering at Montana Tech of The University of Montana.

EXPLANATION: The Department of General Engineering currently offers an option in Control System Engineering within the Bachelor of Science Degree and the Master of Science Degree in General Engineering. This name change to the Electrical Engineering option will 1) conform to names used by comparative programs; 2) provide a degree name aligned with industry standards; and 3) enhance opportunities for graduates. The majority of General Engineering programs in the United States offer an electrical option (usually with a strong control system focus similar to Tech's). The proposed name change will update Tech's program to naming standards used by competing General Engineering Degree programs in the United States, thus benefiting students when competing for jobs. The name change will also better align with industry naming conventions. The General Engineering industrial advisory board strongly supports this proposal. No new courses, facilities, or faculty will be needed as a result of this change.
