ITEM 115-1009-R0502  Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Geography on John J. Donahue, College of Arts and Sciences; The University of Montana-Missoula

 

THAT:  John J. Donahue, Professor of Geography, in his 27 years of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned the title of Emeritus Professor of Geography.

 

EXPLANATION:  John J. Donahue earned his Ph.D. degree in 1971 from Syracuse University. He joined The University of Montana's Department of Geography in 1975 and has provided almost three decades of continuous service. Professor Donahue established the Physical Geography Option in the Department of Geography in 1999. In connection with his teaching responsibilities, he prepared supplemental textbooks for courses in Landform Geomorphology and Image GIS. Professor Donahue has also actively engaged in research and has long worked collaboratively with the United States Forest Service. His recent publications include:  Z. Sun and J. Donahue, "Statistically Derived Bedload Formula for Any Fraction of Nonuniform Sediment," Journal of Hydrological Engineering 126, no. 2 (2000): 105-111, and John Donahue and Mark Jensen, "Use of General Geomorphometry in the Characterization of Mountain Topography," Intermountain Journal of Sciences 7, nos. 2/3 (2001): 78-91. Professor Donahue has also engaged in a broad range of service activities. In recent years, he has served as a University Teachers' Union Bargaining Council Representative, as a member of the departmental Faculty Evaluation Committee, Faculty Liaison to the Student Evaluation Committee, the Department's United Way Fund Representative, and curator of the Department of Geography's Maps and Aerial Photographs.

The Department of Geography proudly recommends Professor John J. Donahue for Emeritus status.
