ITEM 114-2702-R0302 Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Humanities & Religious Studies upon Walter B. Gulick; Montana State University-Billings
WHEREAS, Professor Walter B. Gulick has completed a distinguished academic career of 36 years, including 28 years at MSU-Billings, formerly Eastern Montana College;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick served the University community as Interim Academic Vice Chancellor for two years and also served as Director of Graduate Studies and Research;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick taught students at MSU-Billings in over 30 different courses, many of them interdisciplinary in nature, and was the recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award in 1983;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick twice was appointed a Fulbright Scholar, sharing his enthusiasm about American history, philosophy, and values in Hungary and Moldova;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick was founding director of an International Studies Program and an Honors Program at MSU-Billings;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick served on the boards of several national or international professional organizations and continues to serve as President of the Polanyi Society;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick shared his expertise through the publication of many contributions to books and professional journals and serves as book review editor of Tradition and Discovery;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick served the University and his colleagues as member and chair of numerous campus and statewide committees;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick served as member or chair of over 20 conference planning committees and has given scores of talks to local community groups;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick participated in several NEH Summer Seminars or Institutes and secured a number of grants in support of scholarly production and community outreach;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick was a member of the Montana Committee for the Humanities and has participated in many MCH activities through the years;
WHEREAS, Dr. Gulick has served many national, state and community boards, including the Montana Association of Churches, the Billings Symphony (President, 1997-98), United Campus Ministry (26 years), Peace Institute, Town and Gown, and Justice and Witness Ministries (Cleveland);
AND WHEREAS, Montana State University-Billings wishes to honor Dr. Gulick for his outstanding service to education and the state of Montana;
THEREFORE, the Board of Regents of Higher Education, on recommendation of the Chancellor of MSU-Billings, confers upon Dr. Gulick the title of Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Humanities and Religious Studies, with all rights, privileges, and responsibilities pertaining thereto.
