THAT: Juliette Crump, Professor of Drama/Dance, in her twenty-seventh year of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of the Montana University System, and has earned the title of Professor of Drama/Dance Emeritus.
EXPLANATION: Juliette Crump came to The University of Montana from Virginia Commonwealth University to head the dance program in 1974. She hoped to expose Montana students to experimental choreographers, choreograph and perform work based on Montana history and culture, and establish a summer dance workshop for dance students in studios around Montana and the nation.
Professor Crump succeeded in bringing in over 60 dancers and dance companies during her ten years as head of dance. She sponsored the last performance of the GRAND UNION, a famous avant-garde company, in Missoula in 1976. She received two federal Title I grants to tour two original works"Prairie/Stretch, Settled Sod," and "Montana Chautauqua," to 20 different towns in Montana. The summer dance workshop continued at full enrollment for ten years and brought UM much recognition from dance teachers and students in the region.
In 1980, Professor Crump received a sabbatical and tuition funds from the Northwest Foundation to obtain certification as a Laban Movement Analyst through the Laban/Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies in New York. She continued her research and writing in the area of movement. In 1990, she received another sabbatical to expand her research and publication interests in Asian dance. She consequently became a specialist in the dance program, teaching Laban theory, dance history and Arts in Culture, the core curriculum of the School of Fine Arts. She has published articles in professional journals, mostly on Asian dance, and given more than a dozen paper presentations and lecture/demonstrations at national and international dance conferences. She has also served the Asian Studies committee on campus and has danced in Mansfield Conference events.
The Department of Drama/Dance proudly recommends Professor Juliette Crump for Emeritus status.
