RE: Ratification of Tentative Agreement with the Montana State University-Northern Federation of Teachers

DATE:  May 17-18, 2001

Attached is a summary of the tentative agreement with the Montana State University-Northern Federation of Teachers. This tentative agreement covers the current fiscal year end will expire on June 30, 2001.

The tentative agreement provides for a 1.6% average increase for faculty retroactive to October 1, 2000. This increase is on top of a $285.00 experience point increase that was implemented on August 1, 2000. The compensation for the VICA advisors was increased from $950 to $1,200 effective July 1, 2001.

The provisions concerning summer session compensation were revised. The option to wait until after the appropriations bill is signed by the governor before issuing summer contracts was deleted. The cap on summer session compensation was removed. Summer session compensation will in the future be based on the prior years salary instead of the subsequent years salary. The requirement that faculty submit a promotion plan was deleted because it had not been uniformly complied with in the past. The remaining changes are not substantive.

The tentative agreement has been ratified by the bargaining unit. I recommend approval of the tentative agreement.
