ITEM 108-2701-R0900  Authorization to Confer the Title of Professor of History Emeritus upon Dr. Mumtaz A. Fargo; Montana State University-Billings


WHEREAS, Professor Mumtaz A. Fargo has completed a distinguished teaching career of thirty-two years at Montana State University-Billings, formerly Eastern Montana College;

WHEREAS, Professor Fargo has served as chair of the Department of History for twenty-four years;

WHEREAS, he has been a member of numerous campus bodies including the Faculty Senate, which he presided over for three years, Academic Senate Budget Committee, International Education Committee, Graduate Committee, and Library Committee;

WHEREAS, he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Montana State University Foundation for six years;

WHEREAS, he served as consultant to the United States Department of Education International Studies Programs, The American Association of State Colleges and Universities International Programs, and the Fulbright-Hayes Group Project Abroad and Foreign Consultant Programs;

WHEREAS, he has appeared frequently on local television as an authority on Middle Eastern affairs and lectured to numerous civic and religious groups including the Billings Committee on Foreign Relations, the American Association of University Women, Town and Gown, Yellowstone Kiwanis, Rotary Club, and the Institute for Peace Studies of Rocky Mountain College;

WHEREAS, he has addressed international and national conferences, as well as spoken to groups throughout Montana and the region concerning current events, especially on conditions in the Middle East;

WHEREAS, he has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia to study and do research;

AND WHEREAS, Montana State University-Billings wishes to honor Professor Fargo for his outstanding service to education and his discipline;

THEREFORE, the Board of Regents of Higher Education, on the recommendation of the Chancellor of Montana State University-Billings, confers upon Dr. Mumtaz A. Fargo the title of Professor of History Emeritus, with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities pertaining thereto.
