ITEM 108-2002-R0700    RETIREMENT of Terry L. Anderson, Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics; Montana State University-Bozeman


THAT:  Upon the occasion of the retirement of Terry L. Anderson from the faculty of Montana State University, the Board of Regents wishes to express its appreciation for his service to the University, the Montana University System, and the people of the State of Montana.

EXPLANATION:  Dr. Anderson was hired into MSU's Agricultural Economics/Economics Department in September 1972. Throughout his career, he consistently received evaluation ratings of "Exceeded Performance Expectations" or "Extraordinary Performance." His instructional contributions were recognized as MSU Mortar Board's Professor of the Month for February 1987 and the recipient of the 1990 Phi Kappa Phi Anna K. Fridley Distinguished Teaching Award. He contributed his expertise to other MSU departments, such as the Yellowstone Center for Mountain Environments and the Trade Research Center.

Dr. Anderson has been recognized nationally and internationally for his expertise. In 1977, he was awarded a National Fellowship at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In 1980, he was granted a Hoover Institution Fellowship to participate in the Mt. Pelerin Society general meetings held in Stanford, CA. In 1987, he was awarded a Fulbright Grant as a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Resource Management, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. That same year, he was a Visiting Professor of Economics at Clemson University. In 1989, Governor Stan Stephens appointed him to the Montana Board of Natural Resources. His experience there helped to enrich his teaching and his research. His research and writings were supported in part with non-university funding from Bozeman's Political Economy Research Center (PERC), which he had co-founded in 1970. Dr. Anderson currently serves as PERC's Executive Director. In 1995, he was a John M. Olin Visiting Scholar at Cornell University. In 1997, he became one of a select group of internationally recognized scholars to attain the status of Senior Fellow (Adjunct) at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.

Dr. Anderson is the author of dozens of articles in scholarly journals, including the top journals in his field, and he has authored or edited more than 20 books. He has been an invited speaker to both national and international conferences. Highly respected for his expertise in resource economics, he has been invited to testify before the Montana legislature on various occasions, and before committees of the U.S. Congress.

For these and other contributions, the Board of Regents of Higher Education is pleased to confer upon Terry L. Anderson the rank of Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics and Economics at Montana State University and wishes him well for many pleasant years in the future.
