ITEM 107-1013-R0500  Resolution Concerning the Retirement of Evan Denney, Professor of Geography, College of Arts and Sciences; The University of Montana-Missoula


THAT:  Evan Denney, Professor of Geography, in his 31 years of dedicated service to The University of Montana, has merited the commendation of the Board of Regents of The Montana University System, and has earned the title of Professor of Geography Emeritus.

EXPLANATION:  Evan Denney earned his Ph.D. in 1970 from the University of Washington. Professor Denney came to the Geography Department in 1969 and has provided 31 years of continuous service to The University of Montana. From 1978 to 1981, and again during the 1997-1998 academic year, Professor Denney served with excellence as Chair of the Department of Geography. He was instrumental in the creation and development of the M.S. degree in Rural, Town and Regional Planning and served that program with distinction for many years. In his capacity as a planner, Dr. Denney served on the Missoula Planning Board from 1974 to May 1978. He was elected President of the Missoula Planning Board in 1975 and served in that capacity until 1978. Professor Denney's regional specialty is the Geography of China. His field research in China has focused on rural development and agriculture problems in Chinese "natural" villages and the impact and problems relating to the development of township and village enterprise. Professor Denney served as Faculty Athletic Representative to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from 1978 to 1985 and again during 1986 and 1987.

In recognition of his accomplishments and meritorious service, the Department of Geography recommends Professor Evan Denney for Emeritus status.
