EXPLANATION: Robert (Bob) L. Deaton came to The University of Montana in 1969. During his 30 years of service, Professor Deaton dedicated himself to the education and the welfare of students, not only in the Department of Social Work but also in the larger University as well. In both core social work classes and in a variety of innovative supplementary offerings, Professor Deaton has offered supportive and challenging instruction. He has expected his students to master not only the content of the course, but to examine it carefully from ethical, historical and contemporary perspectives and to apply their mastery in human service contexts.
In addition, Professor Deaton has served as an outstanding advisor. His door always remained open to students, and he encouraged many students to persist and to accomplish much, because of his steady assistance.
Professor Deaton's research reflects an emphasis on community, particularly families, and children. His interest lies with the poor, the oppressed and those without the resources enjoyed by the majority. He secured grant funds and extended the capabilities of the Department beyond the University, to the entire State.
Professor Deaton has served on many University-wide committees including the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate. He represented a steady and strong hand in the evolution of The University of Montana throughout his tenure.
Long recognized for his professional work, in particular to the children and families of this State, Professor Deaton also organized and served in crisis response teams to meet the needs of emergency service personnel throughout Montana. Chosen as the outstanding social worker in Montana by his professional organization, he also received the University's award for Community Service in 1999, a singular honor.
The dedicated service of Professor Deaton has made a profound difference in the lives of students, in the quality of The University of Montana as a learning institution and to the citizens of Montana.
