ITEM 104-2702-R0799 Recommendation to Confer (Posthumously) the Title of Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education Emeritus upon Mr. Robert E. Lee; Montana State University-Billings
WHEREAS, Robert E. (Bob) Lee taught theory, methods, and activities courses for Physical Education Majors and service courses for other programs for 30 years at Eastern Montana College/Montana State University-Billings;
WHEREAS, he served as Head Football Coach from 1964 to 1971 and won the Montana Collegiate Championships in 1964, 1965, 1966, and 1968, and second place in 1967, 1969, and 1970;
WHEREAS, Bob served as faculty advisor to the HPER Club and the EMC Ski Club;
WHEREAS, he was voted District 5 N.A.I.A. "Coach of the Year" in 1965;
WHEREAS, he served as Head Baseball and Wrestling Coach in 1964;
WHEREAS, he served as Head Tennis Coach from 1965 to 1982 and again from 1989 to 1996, during which time his teams won 14 consecutive district 12 championships and represented District 12 in the National N.A.I.A. championships 8 times;
WHEREAS, he designed and drew the first Yellowjacket "bee" logo mascot;
WHEREAS, he chose EMC's colors of black and yellow;
WHEREAS, he designed the EMC Yellowjacket uniform stripes;
WHEREAS, he taught skiing and conducted uncounted ski excursions on behalf of students and the University;
WHEREAS, he was active in the Montana Officials Organization, the Western Athletic Conference Basketball and Football Officials Association, the N.A.I.A. Football Coaches Association, the American Football Coaches Association, the Skyline Conference Basketball Officials Association and the Wyoming Officials Association;
WHEREAS, he was associated with the United States Lawn Tennis Association, the United States Tennis Association, the Montana Tennis Association, the Billings Tennis Association, and the United States Tennis Professional Association;
WHEREAS, he was active in the National Musicians Union and the Billings Musicians Union;
WHEREAS, he participated in professional training workshops in racquet sports (1981 and 1982), the National Tennis Teacher's Conference (1989), and additional tennis workshops (1968, 1970, 1973, 1975, and 1989);
WHEREAS, he taught tennis workshops for the Billings Tennis Association and offered numerous tennis workshops for other local and civic groups;
WHEREAS, he supported, taught for, and worked organizationally with Junior Tennis from 1975 to 1998;
WHEREAS, he supported and worked organizationally with Montana High School Tennis Tournaments at local, state, and regional levels;
WHEREAS, he consulted with and taught for the Eagle Mount Ski Program for the Handicapped and provided instruction for Eagle Mount Ski instructors;
WHEREAS, he worked with the local United Way campaign;
WHEREAS, he served the Billings Amateur Hockey League as coach, teacher, coach instructor, board member, and provided athletic training for volunteer coaches in the program from 1989 to 1998;
WHEREAS, he jointly authored Beginning Tennis (BURGESS, 1983);
WHEREAS, he wrote and local published Teaching Tennis to a Large Class;
WHEREAS, he was instrumental in gaining approval in 1973 for building the campus tennis courts which were completed in 1976;
WHEREAS, he was instrumental in gaining approval to equip the new auxiliary gymnasium, built in 1981, with a specialized floor covering for use as indoor tennis courts; and
WHEREAS, he was inducted into the Eastern Montana College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993;
AND WHEREAS, Montana State University-Billings wishes to honor Mr. Robert E. (Bob) Lee for his outstanding service to education;
THEREFORE, the Board of Regents of Higher Education, on recommendation of the Chancellor of Montana State University-Billings, confers upon Mr. Robert E. (Bob) Lee the title of Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education Emeritus, with all rights, privileges, and responsibilities pertaining thereto.
