Regents’ Workgroup
At its August 3, 2009 annual planning session, the Board of Regents designated a subcommittee of regents to serve as a workgroup to address topics related to reinventing and reforming the Montana University System. This new workgroup is expected to provide project oversight and ensure internal and external feedback in order to facilitate progress on major initiatives between Board meetings. The workgroup will provide regental guidance for the newly formed Leadership Council and will return to the full Board with specific recommendations that will influence the University System’s strategic directions.
The Regents’ Workgroup will initially focus its attention on issues related to performance based funding, mission differentiation, and the 2-year education initiative. The workgroup is starting in this arena as many of the concepts developed in our Making Opportunity Affordable (MOA) process for two year education will be directly translatable to the four year institutions and each of these topics relate to discussions and directions identified by the committees of the new Leadership Council.
Members of the workgroup include Regent Todd Buchanan (chair), Regent Janine Pease, and Regent Lynn Morrison Hamilton. In addition, Board Chair Steve Barrett will appoint a small, diverse group of advisors (both internal and external to the Montana University System) to serve as a “sounding board” for feedback to the workgroup. The Board projects that the workgroup will serve throughout the 2009-2010 academic year.
This workgroup’s website will serve as a central point for communicating with the MUS community, sharing resources and information, and documenting recommendations and decisions points. This extra attention to the reinvention initiatives will help focus the Montana University System on achieving high levels of academic attainment statewide in an increasingly tight fiscal environment.
