AN OVERVIEW OF THE TWO (2) DEGREE PROGRAMS IN SCIENCE:

 

1)     Montana State University-Northern would offer two (2) degrees in science, to serve the teaching and non-teaching market.

 

2)     The teaching degree would remain almost exactly as it currently exists on the campus.� IE, a bachelor of science in education degree, with a teaching major in general science.� That degree program was reviewed by the Office of Public Instruction earlier this year, as part of MSU-Northern�s periodic review, and passed with good marks.

 

3)     The non-teaching degree would be a bachelor of science degree in biology.

 

4)     The two degrees would share a 35-credit common core of classes.� Those classes would be:

--BIOL 221, Botany I (3 credits)

--BIOL 222, Botany I Laboratory (2 credits)

5)     In addition to the common core, the general science teaching degree would require:

--21 additional credits in the science and health areas.�

--6 selective credits, primarily from the biology area.

--32 credits in the Professional Education Core.

 

6)     In addition to the common core, the biology non-teaching degree would

require:

� --19 � 21 credits of coursework in science and mathematics.

� --12 selective credits in biology (BIOL), all at the 300 � 400

� � level.

 

NOTE: the total number of biology (BIOL) courses required for the degree equals 40 credits.� That includes the undergraduate research and current topics courses, which have a natural science prefix.

 

 

7)     The selective credit list especially would be almost like a common core,

using the same set of courses as much as possible to satisfy that component of each degree.
