NOTICE OF INTENT Approval of Proposal to Add a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Science; Montana Tech of The University of Montana

THAT: The Board of Regents of Higher Education authorizes Montana Tech of The University of Montana to add a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Science.

EXPLANATION: A strong and diverse background in science is the foundation to a variety of careers in our increasingly technical society, particularly careers that are interdisciplinary. The proposed Bachelor of Science Degree in General Science will provide breadth in the biological, chemical, geological, and physical sciences; and depth in two areas of concentration in which students will take additional upper division course work. Interwoven with the course work in science is course work in mathematics sufficient to support this degree, formal course work in writing, and course work in science and technological studies that will allow the student to integrate science and societal issues. The addition of a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Science will diversify the degree offerings of the college, better serving its students and the state at minimal cost. The degree is expected to add to the colleges enrollment and increase retention.
